Vol. 455 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing Policy.

Mary Wallace

Question:

93 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for the Environment the efforts, if any, which have been undertaken by local authorities following the publication of "Social Housing-The Way Ahead" to ensure that housing advice and information services are available and suitable to people with disabilities. [12368/95]

"Social Housing — The Way Ahead" exhorts local authorities to provide a comprehensive and cohesive housing service to persons in need of housing. This would, of course, include people with disabilities. Since the publication of the document on 2 May, officials of my Department have held a series of regional seminars for local authority housing personnel to discuss the implementation of the proposals in the document, including the delivery of a good housing advice and information service. For the same purpose, a national conference has been arranged for elected councillors on 5 July. While I am not aware of what specific actions have, as yet, been taken by local authorities in the matter, I will avail of every opportunity that presents itself to remind them of the special need to cater for people with disabilities in developing all aspects of their housing service.
