Vol. 455 No. 5

Written Answers. - Development of Hurling.

John Browne

Question:

23 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the plans, if any, he has to include the game of hurling under the arts as part of our heritage and culture; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10295/95]

The Deputy will be aware that sport comes within the remit of my colleague, the Minister for Education, and accordingly the game of hurling does not come within the statutory remit of my Department or of any statutory funding bodies under my aegis.

Although I have the highest regard for the exceptional skills attaching to this, our national game, and represent one constituency in a country — Galway — which has demonstrated those skills with considerable success in recent years, I have no official role to play in the future development of the game of hurling.
