Vol. 455 No. 5

Written Answers. - Bone Densitometer.

Mary Wallace

Question:

65 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the only machine available to the public for detecting bone density is the bone densitometer located in Trinity College, Dublin and that it costs £80 per patient which is prohibitive for many patients; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that this is a very important service regarding the early detection of osteoporosis; if he will outline his policy in this area and if his Department will consider the purchasing and locating of a bone densitometer machine for each of the eight health boards; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12513/95]

Limerick East): Bone Densitometry is one of a number of new technologies which have recently been developed in the health care area. The development of this technology will be monitored especially in relation to the health gain that may result from the service. At present, there is insufficient evidence available to make judgment on the cost-effectiveness of the technique and it is unlikely that such evidence will become available in the short term. The position will continue to be monitored by the Department.
