Vol. 455 No. 5

Written Answers. - Driver Testing System.

Noel Ahern

Question:

82 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if driver testers operate on a weekly success rate quota system; if those who do the test on a Friday have a reduced success rate; the statistics, if any, he has for the numbers who lose their jobs due to failure to pass the driving test; and if he will examine and comment on the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 who lost her job having been deemed unsuccessful at Finglas driving centre. [12500/95]

The factors taken into consideration in the conduct of the driving test are laid down in an EU Directive and are prescribed in Irish law. Unless the required level of competence to drive is displayed during the course of the driving test, it is not open to the driver tester to pass the applicant.

Testers do not operate on the basis of any kind of pre-determined pass or fail rate. There is no evidence to suggest that the day of the week has any bearing on pass/fail rates. I understand that the applicant in this case has appealed the decision to refuse a certificate of competency to the District Court. Consequently, I do not propose to comment on the case.
