Vol. 455 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Authority Expenditure.

Robert Molloy

Question:

86 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give local government expenditure as a percentage of GDP in the years 1984 and 1994. [12552/95]

The information sought is as follows: 1984, 9.3 per cent; 1994, 4.9 per cent (estimate).

Because of the introduction of 100 per cent capital grants in 1988 and the elimination of loan repayments and subsidies on capital loans written off by the Exechequer, there was a significant technical once-off reduction in the figures for total local authority expenditure between 1987 and 1988. In addition, local authorities were relieved of a number of statutory demands and levies in the period 1986 to 1995. As a result, figures for local authority expenditure as a percentage of GDP in 1984 are not comparable with those for 1994.
