Vol. 455 No. 7

Social Welfare (Amendment) Bill, 1995: First Stage.

I move:

"That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the social welfare provisions for persons who have lost employment by reason of a stoppage of work which was due to a trade dispute and to introduce transparency to the social welfare appeals system."

I ask that leave be given to take that Bill in Government time. I am extremely disappointed that this matter will not be taken today and I am appalled at the shabby treatment meted out to Irish Press workers. is there a reason the Minister is punishing those workers?

I thought the Deputy wished to raise something appropriate to our business now. Is the introduction of Deputy Walsh's Private Members' Bill, the Social Welfare (Amendment) Bill, 1995, being opposed?

As the Bill is being opposed the debate on it is adjourned in accordance with our Standing Orders to the next day on which Private Members' Business will be taken.

We know the Minister's attitude to workers.
