Vol. 456 No. 1

Written Answers. - Portlaoise Prison.

Liam Hyland

Question:

155 Mr. Hyland asked the Minister for Justice if she will take immediate steps to ensure the full utilisation of the prison facilities in Portlaoise, where there has already been considerable State investment, in view of the success of the peace process resulting in the release of political prisoners; and her plans for the further development of the prison, bearing in mind the commitment to duty of the officers employed in the prison, the high level of employment and its relevance to the economy of Portlaoise town. [13497/95]

There are certain options open to me in regard to these prison places and I am reviewing them. Decisions will be made in due course when I have completed this review. I can, however, reassure the Deputy that the review is being carried out taking into account that Portlaoise prison will continue to have an important role to play within our prison system.
