Vol. 456 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Funds Applications.

Peter Barry

Question:

54 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received requests from Waterford Corporation for special allocations to deal with the traffic problems on the Dunmore East road, the completion of the Outer Ring road and the necessity to upgrade the Airport road. [13548/95]

A submission has recently been received from Waterford Corporation regarding improvement works to non-national roads in their area, including the roads referred to in the question. The corporation specifically requested additional funding in 1996 for the Dunmore Road Scheme for which a grant allocation of £150,000 was made this year under the EU co-financed grants scheme.

All of the roads referred to are non-national roads and, in the normal way, it would be the responsibility of the relevant local authority to finance maintenance and improvement works from their own resources, supplemented by the annual discretionary block grants from my Department. It is open, however, to the corporation to submit all or any of the projects for consideration in 1996 in the context of the EU co-financed scheme of grants, if it considers that the projects meet the strict criteria which apply. The corporation has already been informed that consideration will be given to further funding for the Dunmore Road Scheme in 1996 when these grants are being allocated.
