Vol. 456 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fire Safety Awareness Precautions.

Ivor Callely

Question:

123 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, his Department has to heighten awareness of fire safety in the home; if he is introducing any new element into fire safety awareness promotions in 1995/1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13514/95]

The National Safety Council, which operates under the aegis of my Department, is responsible for the promotion of fire safety awareness. The council is at present finalising plans for its annual campaign which, I understand, will this year target school children and the elderly in particular.

My Department has again made funds available to the council this year towards its special smoke alarms project whereby alarms are installed in the homes of elderly and disabled persons living alone.
