Vol. 456 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

12 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Education the total number of remedial teachers employed at secondary school level engaged in raising the literacy levels of students who left primary school unable to read or write. [13487/95]

A total of 350 ex-quota remedial posts have been allocated to second level schools for the current school year. This represents an increase of 73 posts over the number allocated in 1994-95. As part of their duties, all remedial teachers in second-level schools give particular attention to improving the literacy levels of entrants experiencing difficulties in this area. In fulfilling this role, the remedial teacher supplements the work of the individual subject teachers.
