Vol. 456 No. 2

Written Answers. - Health Insurance.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

49 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Health if he will have arrangements made for the issuing of urgent medical insurance and a medical card for a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath who is in St. James's Hospital in Dublin. [13663/95]

Limerick East): Any arrangement to join a private health insurance scheme is a matter solely for the individual and the health insurer. As Minister for Health I have no function in making such arrangements. The issue of a medical card to any individual is a matter for the Chief Executive Officer of the relevant health board.

I have had inquiries made of the Midland Health Board in this case. I understand that, following the normal review procedures, this person's medical card was withdrawn in August as the board did not receive a reply to requests, issued earlier in the year, to submit a renewal application form. Another application form has been issued to the family and they have undertaken to submit same to the Midland Health Board as soon as possible. I have asked that the board would, on receipt of the new application, have this case dealt with as a matter of urgency.
