Vol. 456 No. 2

Written Answers. - Education Grant.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

81 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education if she will respond to the case of a person (details supplied) in County Dublin following correspondence from the family of the student; and if she will consider the case favourably given the amount of taxpayers' money being saved as a result of this Irish student following her studies in England and France. [13674/95]

As already outlined in correspondence with the Deputy, grants-scholarships under the schemes of financial assistance operated under the aegis of my Department are not tenable in respect of attendance at courses outside Ireland. There are no other monies at the disposal of my Department out of which financial assistance could be made available to students in respect of their studies abroad.

However, it is intended that maintenance grants under the Higher Education Grants Schemes will be extended to approved courses being followed by Irish students abroad with effect from the 1996-1997 academic year. Details on this initiative have yet to be determined.
