Vol. 456 No. 2

Written Answers. - Appointment of Garda Sergeant.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

83 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the delay in having a Garda sergeant appointed to a Garda station (details supplied) in County Cork in view of the fact that the previous sergeant retired some weeks ago; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13625/95]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda manpower and resources to individual areas. I am informed by them that the position of sergeant at the Garda station in question is vacant since 27 August 1995 due to the retirement of the former sergeant there.

There is one Garda attached to the station who resides in the area. In addition, the area is supervised by the District officer, an inspector and two sergeants who are attached to the district headquarters. The area in question is also patrolled by marked and unmarked mobile units from the district headquarters. The Garda authorities have informed me that it is the divisional officer's intention to fill this vacancy as soon as possible with due regard to the need to fill other sergeant vacancies in the Cork East Division.
