Vol. 456 No. 5

Written Answers. - Services for the Disabled.

Mary Wallace

Question:

177 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the meetings, if any, he has held with groups and individuals concerned with the provision of transport services that are accessible to people with disabilities; whether he has discussed this issue with any of the public transport agencies; the result of any such discussions; and whether he intends to take any action to extend the accessibility of the public transport system. [14217/95]

In July last I met with representatives of INCARE, one of the organisations representing the interests of people with disabilities, having earlier arranged for the group to meet with the Chief Executive of Córas Iompair Éireann.

Transport providers generally and Córas Iompair Éireann in particular are well aware that it is my policy that every effort should be made to make transport services and infrastructure as accessible as possible in response to the requirements of the mobility impaired and having regard to the availability of resources. Implementation of any improvements is, of course, a matter for the transport providers themselves, and I look forward to further progress in this area to build on the existing achievements which I have outlined to the House on a number of occasions, as, for example, in the course of my reply to Questions Nos. 177, 178 and 179 on 23 May, last.
