Vol. 456 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Barracks Project.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

184 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Defence the works being undertaken in Cathal Brugha Barracks adjacent to Fitzgerald Street, Dublin, where already one massive aerial has been erected causing great concern to the adjoining residents; the plans, if any, he has to erect further aerials in this location; if he will confirm that his Department had planning permission before erecting this monstrosity towering over Harold's Cross which is an old residential area of Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14257/95]

Work is in progress on a project at Cathal Brugha Barracks, involving the refurbishing of an existing building, to provide general-purpose accommodation, including a communications centre, in lieu of similar facilities at Collins Barracks, Dublin, which is due to be handed over to the Office of Public Works by the end of 1996. As part of the project at Cathal Brugha Barracks it has been necessary to provide a mast to carry aerial equipment, similar to equipment previously located at Collins Barracks, so that the new communications centre can function. The need for further masts of the type referred to at Cathal Brugha Barracks is not foreseen at this time. A requirement for planning permission did not arise in the case of the above mentioned project.
