Vol. 456 No. 5

Written Answers. - Trade in the EU Markets.

Noel Ahern

Question:

16 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if his Department has pursued any complaints with the European Commission regarding the difficulties still being experienced by Irish exporters to EU markets in view of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 24 of 10 May 1995; the action, if any, taken by the Commission; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14015/95]

The IBEC survey on barriers to trade, which was carried out earlier this year at my request to determine if the Single Market was working for Irish companies, found that one-third of respondent exporters had experienced difficulties with other EU markets. IBEC was subsequently requested to analyse the survey results to ascertain the nature of the problems concerned. Such detailed information is required to enable my Department to pursue these problems with the EU Commission and other member states concerned.

I understand that IBEC is currently analysing the survey results in the manner requested by me. As soon as the necessary information is available, my Department will vigorously pursue these complaints with the EU Commission or with the member states concerned, as appropriate.
