Vol. 456 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Schemes Eligibility.

Mary Wallace

Question:

64 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that people with permanent conditions are frequently required to submit for re-assessment of their condition in order to qualify for various schemes administered by his Department and bodies under the aegis of his Department; the steps, if any, that have been taken to review the administration of schemes which support people with permanent conditions. [14214/95]

Limerick East): Generally where a person has a disability or illness which is clearly of a permanent nature, health boards would not require that person to submit for re-assessment of his/her condition. This would apply in the case of the long term illness scheme, the disabled person's maintenance allowance scheme and the domiciliary care allowance. However, the Deputy will appreciate that as a matter of course, health boards would monitor on an ongoing basis the services required by persons with a permanent illness or disability. I do not propose to review the procedures for assessment under these schemes.
