Vol. 456 No. 5

Written Answers. - Litter Act.

Michael Creed

Question:

74 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment his views on the adequacy of the Litter Act regarding indiscriminate dumping; and the plans, if any, he has to amend legislation to permit litter wardens to impose on-the-spot fines on identified offenders. [14197/95]

I have already stated my intention to review the Litter Act, 1982 as part of a widely-based initiative against litter which I am promoting. The Waste Bill, 1995 before the Dáil, will also provide for improved controls against dumping.

The Litter Act, 1982 contains explicit provisions prohibiting the creation of litter. These include a power for litter wardens to issue on-the-spot fines.
