Vol. 456 No. 5

Written Answers. - Polling Stations Accessiblity.

Mary Wallace

Question:

77 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for the Environment the reason he has not included any reference to the accessibility of polling stations in the draft regulations covering local authority elections. [14228/95]

At present, the question of the accessibility of polling stations is regarded as a matter which can be dealt with administratively, and appropriate guidance on it is provided to returning officers. If it were decided that the matter should be dealt with by law, the legal provision should have general application and should not be confined to local elections, which are the only elections to which the draft regulations relate.

The Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 1995, introduced by the Deputy, touches on the matter generally. I look forward to hearing the case the Deputy will advance in support of the proposals in that Bill.
