Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - Reappointment of Teacher.

Michael Ring

Question:

122 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education if she will reappoint a second teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Mayo in view of the fact that there is currently one teacher teaching all grades of primary school to 21 pupils. [14825/95]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September the previous year. The enrolment of the school referred to by the Deputy on 30 September, 1994, was 21 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing in the 1995/1996 school year of a principal only.

Exceptions to the normal staffing arrangements arise when a school experiences rapid growth in its enrolment, or where it is not possible to organise classes within maximum class size guidelines. Since neither situation applies in this case, there is no basis for sanctioning additional staffing for the school.
