Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - Shellfish Catches.

Peter Barry

Question:

42 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Marine the shellfish which can only be caught on a commercial basis under licence from his Department. [14989/95]

All vessels engaged in commercial sea fishing activities require a sea fishing boat licence from the Department of the Marine. In general all shellfish species can be fished under a sea fishing boat licence unless there is a specific preclusion otherwise. For example certain vessel licences contain preclusions which prohibit fishing for escallop in certain areas where these stocks are under pressure.

In addition there is a category of vessels which are licensed to fish exclusively for clams and shellfish.
