Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - URBAN Programme.

Tony Gregory

Question:

67 Mr. Gregory asked the Taoiseach if consideration will be given to funding Dublin inner city areas from the additional £3.8 million under the URBAN Programme in view of the number of inner city applications previously submitted, none of which were funded, and the critical need and suitability of Dublin's inner city for this programme. [15015/95]

URBAN is a European Union initiative and the areas where it is to apply require the agreement of the European Commission. Agreement was reached with the European Commission that URBAN would apply in Cork and Dublin. In Cork the area is to be the northside of the city and in Dublin the areas are west Tallaght-Clondalkin and Finglas-Ballymun-Darndale. The funding in the case of the latter area was to be concentrated on Ballymun, but the understanding was that Finglas and Darndale would be priority for further funding which the Commission had indicated would be forthcoming. It is not intended to depart from this agreement.

However, the question of the division of the total funding now available, including possible inclusion of Dublin inner city, will be considered by the Government in accordance with the arrangements to be agreed with the European Commission.
