Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Appointment.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

89 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Health if he will have arrangements made for an earlier appointment for heart surgery for a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath. [14907/95]

Limerick East): The person referred to by the Deputy was placed on the waiting list for a coronary artery bypass graft at St. James's Hospital on 3 May 1995 and at this time the hospital is not able to give an exact date of admission. The scheduling of surgery is a matter for the clinical judgment of the consultant concerned and is based solely on the patient's condition and not on the length of time on the waiting list. Emergency cases are given priority. The patient's general practitioner should, accordingly, keep the consultant informed on a regular basis of the patient's condition.
