Vol. 457 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tourism Target.

Peter Barry

Question:

111 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade his views on the level of tourism to date in 1995; if he has satisfied himself that An Bord Fáilte's projections were on target for this period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15211/95]

According to figures released by the Central Statistics Office, an estimated 1,733,000 overseas visits were made to Ireland in the period January to June 1995. This compares to 1,501,000 in the corresponding period in 1994 and represents an increase of over 15 per cent. The performance to date, therefore, is ahead of the Bord Fáilte overall target of 9 per cent growth in 1995.

This excellent performance indicates that 1995 will be one of the best years ever for Irish tourism with anticipated increased numbers and revenue from a number of our main markets.
