Vol. 457 No. 2

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before proceeding to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Geoghegan-Quinn whom I call to state the matter of which she gave notice to me.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to raise the following serious matter; the proposal by the Voluntary Health Insurance Board to charge higher premiums to older people. VHI has increased premiums by 18 per cent in the last 14 months which is almost seven times the rate of inflation and is now planning to levy higher premiums on older people who are least able to afford it.

The Deputy is going beyond the notice she gave to me. That is not in order. Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
