Vol. 457 No. 2

Written Answers. - Washington Conference.

James Leonard

Question:

26 Mr. Leonard asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the follow-up developments to the Washington Conference, such as contacts with individuals who attended, companies who were represented and the interest generated for inward investment. [14664/95]

The Washington Conference provided a uniquely prestigious showcase for the attractions of Ireland, North and South, as a location for US investment and business partnerships in the new context created by peace.

President Clinton's remarkable commitment of his own time and energy and that of his administration in support of US trade and investment for Ireland was unprecedented. It transmitted also a powerful signal of support for the peace process in Ireland.

Follow-up activity to the Washington Conference is ongoing in a number of areas. The most immediate activity is a US Trade and Investment Mission which is visiting the Border counties and Northern Ireland this week. The mission will feature some 15-18 US companies who will meet with Irish companies, State agencies, etc. The primary focus of this mission is in the areas of food products, information technology and environmental protection services.

The Deputy can be assured that, in particular, the Irish State agencies have pursued actively those business contacts which were made at the Washington Conference, in addition to other target companies in the US. He will appreciate that such contacts with companies must of their nature remain confidential.

The Government is committed to making every effort to ensure the long-term success of President Clinton's initiative, especially towards attracting further US investment and support to assist in the process of economic regeneration of the Border counties. I would hope that the forthcoming visit of President Clinton to both parts of Ireland will give further impetus towards this objective.
