Vol. 457 No. 2

Written Answers. - III-treatment of Prisoners.

Austin Deasy

Question:

44 Mr. Deasy asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, the Government has to bring the ill-treatment and wrongful imprisonment of the Birmingham Six, Guilford Four and the Maguire family, to the European Court of Human Rights, with a view to the conviction of the police officers and prison staff involved. [15119/95]

Successive Governments have made clear their views on the ill-treatment and wrongful imprisonment of the Birmingham Six, Guildford Four and the Maguire family. Grave miscarriages of justice occurred in all of these cases.

I understand that the possibility of further legal actions remain in relation to compensation or damages, in some of the cases referred to by the Deputy. The question of the Government taking action before the European Court of Human Rights with a view to the conviction of police officers and prison staff involved in these cases does not arise.
