Vol. 457 No. 2

Written Answers. - British Army Observation Posts.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

48 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make representations to the British Authorities through the Anglo-Irish Secretariat in order to remove the British Army observation posts in the south Armagh area in view of the continuing peace process; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14290/95]

I can inform the Deputy that I raised this matter as recently as yesterday at the Anglo-Irish Conference meeting in Belfast.

I drew attention to the impact of these conspicuous military installations on the attitudes of the local communities. I stressed our view that the new security situation calls for a fundamental review of the way in which they currently operate and indeed of the need for them to be there at all.

I can assure the Deputy that I will continue to monitor this issue in the period ahead, with a view to ensuring that such installations, and the military activities associated with them, are wound down in line with reductions in the security threat with which they were intended to deal.
