Vol. 457 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tax Audit.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

75 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Finance the number of selfemployed tax returns selected by the Revenue Commissioners for random audit during 1994; the number found to have extra tax liability; the total additional revenue raised; and the average amount in each case. [15216/95]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that 85 taxpayers, including companies, were randomly selected for comprehensive audit in 1994. Of these, 67 have been finalised to date. Liability to tax has arisen in 26 of these cases producing £116,426. The average yield in the 67 randomly selected audits completed to date is £1,738.

Audits selected at random are a very small dimension of the audit programme. In all, 4,114 audits yielding £39.89 million were conducted in 1994. The vast majority of audits are riskbased targeted selections. The average yield from targeted audits in 1994 was £9,696.
