Question:

131 Mr. Nolan asked the Minister for the Environment the rate support grant, the annual budget, the number of employees, the amount of rates collected and the amount of public services collected in each local authority area for each of the years from 1985 to date in 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The amounts paid in rate support grant to each local authority for the years 1985 to 1995 are set out in Table I. Information on the number of employees in each local authority area for the years 1985 to 1994 is set out in Table II. This information is based on end of year returns supplied to my Department by local authorities and, accordingly, data for 1995 are not yet available.

The information in respect of the annual budget of local authorities for the years in question is contained in the annual Local Authority Estimates publication, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.

It is assumed that the reference in the question to the amount of public services collected by local authorities relates to local authority income from goods and services. This information, together with details of the amount of rates collected for the years 1985 to 1992 can be obtained from the Returns of Local Taxation which are available in the Oireachtas Library. Outturn figures in respect of 1993 to 1995 for both rates and goods and services are not yet available in my Department but estimates of these are contained in the Local Authority Estimates publications for 1993, 1994 and 1995.

Note 2: Dublin County Council and Dun Laoghaire Borough Corporation were replaced by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin County Councils on 1 January 1994 and the staff returns for 31 December 1993 were supplied in respect of the new County Councils.
