Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tuam (Galway) Drainage Scheme.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

24 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has received from Galway County Council for an extension of the Tuam main drainage scheme to serve a number of premises on the Galway Road, Tuam; if Galway Road, Tuam is the next area to be connected in this scheme; the further proposals, if any, there are for an extension of this scheme in the town of Tuam; and when this decision will be made. [16032/95]

Stage 1 of the Tuam main drainage scheme, comprising a new waste water treatment plant, with collector and storm sewers, was recently completed at a cost of around £10 million.

Galway County Council have proposed, under Stage 2 of the scheme, and at an estimated cost of some £5 million, to extend the collection system to serve further areas of the town and its environs which are currently outside the collection catchment. The council have further proposed certain advance works to serve areas along the Galway Road, Killaloonty, Mill Stream Park and an industrial centre at Weir Road, at a total cost of some £400,000.
Having regard to the existing level of commitments under the water and sewerage programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to approve further stages of the scheme.
