Vol. 458 No. 1

Written Answers. - Vehicle Registration Tax.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

62 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the legal challenges, if any, there have been to the vehicle registration tax; the status of any such actions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16592/95]

To date three sets of legal proceedings have been instituted in the High Court challenging aspects of the vehicle registration tax. These cases are: Used Car Importers of Ireland Limited v the Minister for Finance, the Revenue Commissioners, Ireland and the Attorney-General; Paul Smith v the Revenue Commissioners, Ireland and the Attorney-General and Oxberry Limited v Ireland, the Attorney-General and Liam Irwin. The first two of these actions are being fully defended by the State. The third action is at an initial stage and it is intended to fully defend same. It is not possible to comment further on these cases at this time.
