Vol. 458 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Resources.

Ivor Callely

Question:

76 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the four Garda divisions in which the human resources allocation model is being piloted; if she has satisfied herself with the model and statistics being used; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16462/95]

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 136 of 3 October 1995.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the human resource allocation model referred to in that reply is being piloted in a number of districts within four Divisions as follows:

Dublin Metropolitan Area — South Central
The "A" District — Kevin Street and the "E" District — Donnybrook.
Cork East
The districts of Anglesea Street, Mayfield and Gurranabraher.
Limerick
The districts of Henry Street and Roxboro Road.
Laois/Offaly
The districts of Portlaoise and Tullamore.
This model takes account of factors such as crime levels, public order demands, traffic demands, population and the area covered by a district. As I stated in my earlier reply the population statistics being used are those of the 1991 Census which is the latest available. I understand that the Garda authorities are satisfied that the model and statistics being used provide an effective basis for the operation of the pilot project which, of course, is kept under continuous evaluation and review.
