Vol. 458 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Cork Garda Barracks.

Michael Creed

Question:

80 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice the costs incurred by her Department in repairing a Garda barracks (details supplied) in County Cork; and the plans, if any, she has to appoint a sergeant to this barracks. [16626/95]

There have been no major works carried out at this station since 1984-85 when the Office of Public Works undertook a scheme of works which included interchanging the Garda station and married quarters. Since then only minor essential maintenance works costing no more than £500 per annum have been carried out. An exception was the exterior painting of the station in 1994 at a cost of £2,250.

The deployment of Garda manpower and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that there has been no sergeant allocated to the station in question since 1987. They have further informed me that the station concerned has been part of the rural policing initiative since September 1991 with Kanturk being the area headquarters. This iniative combines the resources of all stations within the area headquarters for patrolling purposes. The station concerned is supervised by a sergeant attached to the area headquarters. The Garda authorities have informed me that they are satisfied with the current Garda service being provided to the area in question and they have no plans at present to allocate a sergeant there.
