David Andrews

Question:

91 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the plans, if any, he has to support the efforts of local authorities to improve signposting and public facilities for tourists. [16584/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 90 and 91 together.

As indicated in the Deputies' questions, responsibility for the provision of directional sign-posting and public facilities rests with the local authorities. However, there is provision for assisting local authorities with the cost of certain amenity sign-posting in the tourism operational programme 1994-99. The measure is administered by the Product Development Management Board and total investment planned over the period is £1.5 million. I understand that the local authorities have agreed a tourist sign-posting programme with Bord Fáilte for consideration under the measure which includes the sign-posting of touring routes, pedestrian signage within towns of historical significance, roadside maps and plaques and pictorial plaques for certain places of interest.
