Tony Killeen

Question:

93 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade his response to the recent submission from the Lough Derg councillors group regarding the CDL consultants report. [16586/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 92 and 93 together.

I met the Lough Derg councillors group in July 1995 when concern was expressed about the deterioration of water quality in the lake and other environmental issues which might affect the tourism potential of the area. I fully share their views on the importance of environmental quality for tourism development in areas such as Lough Derg and I will support any appropriate initiatives taken by my colleague the Minister for the Environment, who has responsibility for such matters.

The councillors group also sought the extension of tax incentives currently available for urban development and designated seaside resorts to areas such as Lough Derg and the Shannon River corridor. While I noted the views expressed by the group, the Deputies will be aware that the question of the extension of such tax incentives is primarily a matter for the Minister for Finance.
