Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Expenditure.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

170 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Defence the amount of reduction in public spending in his Department as a result of the Government decision announced by the Minister for Finance on 8 June 1995; the number of new posts established since that date in his Department and in agencies under the aegis of his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16807/95]

In accordance with the Government decision referred to, no new posts, over and above those existing on 9 June 1995, have been established in the Department of Defence and, consequently, apart from the fluctuations due to normal wastage and routine replacements, the question of a change in the level of public spending in the Department does not arise. There are no relevant agencies attached to the Department.

Question:

171 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Marine the amount of reduction in public spending in his Department as a result of the Government decision announced by the Minister for Finance on 8 June 1995; the number of new posts established since that date in his Department and in agencies under the aegis of his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16808/95]

Following the Government decision announced on 8 June 1995, the primary purpose of which was to stabilise staffing numbers, a baseline staffing figure was established for each Government Department by the Department of Finance. No new posts over that baseline figure have been created in my Department, and no additional posts have been created in bodies operating under its aegis, in the meantime. There has been no reduction in expenditure by my Department as a result of the Government decision in question.
