Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Expenditure.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

64 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the amount of reduction in public spending in his Department as a result of the Government decision announced by the Minister for Finance on 8 June 1995; the number of new posts established since that date in his Department and agencies under the aegis of his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16809/95]

No new posts have been sanctioned for my Department, or in the Office of the Tánaiste, since the Government decision of 6 June 1995. Vacant posts existing at the time of the Government decision have been subsequently filled.

In accordance with the terms of the Government decision of 29 August 1995 to admit to the State an additional 250 refugees from the former Yugoslavia, three new post were created in the Refugee Agency which falls under the aegis of the Department of Foreign Affairs. The refugees will arrive in three groups over the coming months with the first group expected to arrive at the end of November. Efforts are being made to fill these posts by redeployment from elsewhere within the Civil Service; one EO post has already been filled in this way.

No new posts were established in other agencies under the aegis of my Department since the Government decision of 6 June 1995.

In accordance with the Government decision of 6 June 1995, spending in 1996 will be reduced by 0.7 per cent or £873,000, of the 1995 allocation for the two Votes which are accounted for by my Department. Similarily, a reduction of 0.7 per cent, or £11,000 has been applied to the Vote of the Office of the Tánaiste.
