Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - North Clare-South Galway Flooding.

Tony Killeen

Question:

75 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Finance whether the Gortaclare-Bellharbour valley and the Burren-New Quay area of County Clare have been included in the study for investigation of flooding in north Clare and south Galway. [16699/95]

The major multi-disciplinary investigation commissioned earlier this year into the flooding problems in the south Galway area has already been extended to include part of the adjoining area of north Clare. The decision to extend the study area was due solely to the fact that that part of north Clare contributes to, or has an effect on the groundwater regime within the study area. The enlarged study area does not extend to include the Gortaclare-Bellharbour valley or the Burren-New Quay areas. It should not be taken that because a particular area has not been included in the study area that it is being forgotten. It is envisaged that procedures and principles determined during the course of this study can be used later to the benefit of other similar areas, such as those referred to.
