Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - Polio Sufferers.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

84 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Health the approximate number of people in this country who suffer from polio; and the estimated number of those who may be suffering from post-polio syndrome. [16712/95]

Limerick East): While polio was a significant problem in the 1950s, the incidence of new cases then declined dramatically and, while it remains a notifiable disease, no new case has been reported to my Department in recent times. Information on the number of people with polio or who suffer from post-polio syndrome is not routinely collected.
