Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - Transfer of Office of Public Works Responsibilities.

Colm M. Hilliard

Question:

95 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the plans, if any, he has to transfer responsibilities of the Office of Public Works to the new Heritage Council; and the risk, if any, there is that the £2.7 million announced by the Office of Public Works to develop the Navan/Slane Canal could be endangered. [16704/95]

There are no plans to transfer responsibilities of the Office of Public Works to the new statutory Heritage Council.

The Government decided on 19 September 1995 that the heritage services of the Office of Public Works, including waterways, are to be transferred to my Department. This transfer of functions has no implications for the proposal to restore the Boyne navigation, which is at present being examined.
