Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - Post Primary Schools Library Service.

Colm M. Hilliard

Question:

112 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Education the reason her Department does not make any contribution to the post-primary schools library service provided by the local authorities. [16705/95]

A schools library service specifically aimed at second level schools is not provided by local authorities. In general second level students avail of the general library services.

In the provision of new second level schools, or major extensions to existing schools, a library room is normally provided by my Department.

My Department makes grants available for the running costs of second level schools and it is open to the school authorities to buy books for their school libraries out of these grants.
