Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Foot Patrols.

Tony Gregory

Question:

124 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will request that regular Garda foot patrols be assigned to the Infirmary Road area of Dublin 7 as requested by residents at a recent neighbourhood watch meeting in view of the increasing number of attacks on elderly persons. [16654/95]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the allocation of Garda personnel and resources to specific areas. They have informed me that the Infirmary Road area is policed by the gardaí attached to the Bridewell Garda Station.

Both mobile and foot patrols are carried out on a regular basis in the Infirmary Road area. The local community garda maintains regular contact with the local residents and Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators for the area.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Infirmary Road and the North Circular Road Neighbourhood Watch groups held a meeting on 4 November 1995 which was attended by a detective inspector from the Bridewell station, the local juvenile liaison officer and the community garda responsible for the Infirmary Road area. I understand that concern was expressed at the meeting regarding vandalism and attacks on the elderly in the area.

Following this meeting arrangements have been made for increased patrolling in the area with particular attention being directed to the protection of the elderly from attacks or acts of vandalism.
