Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - Detention of Minors.

Tony Gregory

Question:

125 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if three 12 year old boys whose parents had refused to take them back home were held in the Bridewell Garda Station, Dublin 7, over the weekend of 3 November 1995; and her views on whether they represented a serious problem regarding break-ins to cars in the area. [16655/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that four young persons aged between 10-17 were arrested at 8.05 a.m. on Saturday, 4 November 1995, under section 113 of the Road Traffic Acts and brought before Dublin District Court No. 4 at 11.40 a.m. later that morning. Two of the young persons were remanded in custody to a detention centre and the other two were released on bail. On 10 November, at the Dublin Metropolitan Children's Court, the two young persons who had been remanded were released on bail into the care of their father. This case stands adjourned for two months. The young persons were not detained over the weekend in the Garda Station. Residential accommodation was available.
