Vol. 458 No. 4

Written Answers. - Decentralisation Scheme.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

29 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of persons in his Department who have applied to go to Johnstown Castle, County Wexford; the plans, if any, he has regarding the outstanding numbers required to fulfil the Government's announced target; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16996/95]

Following the Government decision of 26 July 1995 to decentralise 350 of my Department's staff to Johnstown Castle, County Wexford, an initial survey of all officers in the Department was undertaken to ascertain the level of interest among staff in relocating to Wexford.

At present some 130 officers have expressed an interest in transferring in their current grade. In order to achieve the Government's announced target of 350, I intend to request my colleague the Minister for Finance to issue a circular seeking further volunteers from the other Government Departments-agencies.

In the event that the response is still inadequate to meet requirements, it may be necessary to arrange promotional competitions or direct recruitment via the Civil Service Commission, to fill the remaining positions.
