Vol. 458 No. 4

Written Answers. - Bantry (Cork) Harbour.

Joe Walsh

Question:

82 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for the Marine if he will sanction the commencement of work on the dredging of Bantry Harbour, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17107/95]

In 1992-93 my Department part funded a hydrographic study and site investigations adjacent to Bantry pier prior to carrying out dredging works. In September 1994 tenders for the dredging contract were received but no contract could be awarded because a dumping at sea permit could not be issued for the project. The level of contamination of the spoil was too high and would have had detrimental implications for the marine environment.

Officials of my Department are in discussion with Cork County Council with a view to identifying the source of the contamination and seeking an alternative site for disposal. Until such time as a suitable cost effective site has been found I am not in a position to say if dredging works will commence.
