Vol. 458 No. 5

Written Answers. - Application for Redress of Wrongs.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

207 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Defence if he has replied to a query addressed to himself over five months ago on behalf of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this issue is a matter of serious concern to the person in question. [17201/95]

The query referred to by the Deputy was acknowledged by my Department on 6 July 1995, and, following protracted inquiries into the matter, a further letter was issued on 20 October, 1995, to the solicitors acting on behalf of the person concerned. I was pleased to be able to confirm to the solicitors that the assurances sought by their client in regard to the Minister's directions of 1988 in connection with his application for redress of wrongs had been complied with as far as all records under the control of my Department were concerned.

With regard to the United Nations records, the Department of Foreign Affairs has been requested to raise this matter with that organisation for appropriate action. I understand a decision in the matter is awaited from the United Nations and I will communicate this to the person's solicitors immediately on receipt.
