Vol. 458 No. 5

Written Answers. - Economic Benefits of Ceasefire.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

67 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the economic benefits that have accrued in Cavan and Monaghan as a result of the cessation of violence; the additional funding that has been allocated to these counties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17292/95]

The new context created by the cessation of violence has transformed the potential for economic development in the entire border region. The Government wishes to see full advantage taken of the significant new opportunities which arise in this context for North-South trade and economic co-operation.

It is difficult at this early stage to quantify, particularly on a geographical basis, the precise economic benefits which have accrued to specific areas since the cessation of violence. Reports from both the private and public sectors indicate that on an overall level there has been substantial increased economic activity in all main sectors such as tourism, services and the industrial sectors. Counties Cavan and Monaghan are strategically placed to benefit from this increased economic activity.

With regard to the question of additional funding for Cavan and Monaghan, I would mention two important initiatives which have occurred consequent on the cessation of violence.
