Question:

88 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Health his Department's policy in relation to the employment of counselling psychologists by health boards; the proposals, if any, there are to extend this service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17355/95]

Limerick East): There is no specific post of counselling psychologist in the public health service. The whole-time equivalent of 128.41 psychologists currently employed throughout the eight health boards together with a number of other health service professionals, such as social workers and nurses, are engaged in the provision of counselling as part of their normal duties. The provision of counselling services by appropriate professionals will continue to be developed and extended as an when resources allow.
