Vol. 458 No. 7

Written Questions. - Boxing Club Membership.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

51 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to address the situation whereby two 15 year old girls in the Dublin North-West area who applied to join a boxing club were refused on the grounds of gender; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17580/95]

The equal status legislation which I propose to introduce will deal with discrimination on a wide range of grounds including gender. The Bill is being drafted at present but its final terms have yet to be approved by the Government.

When the Bill has been approved by the Government and published, there will be opportunities to debate relevant issues including the one raised by the Deputy.
